This painting has been examined by Dr Karoline Feulner and will be included in her catalogue raisonné.
We would like to thank Dr Feulner for her valuable insights:
In our opinion, the confident painting style with the impasto ‘fireballs’ etc. is the work of Max Slevogt. In some places, you can even still see the delicate pencil sketches of the preliminary drawing. Perhaps this unusual subject was a spontaneous idea that he then decided not to pursue further. A year later, he painted the monumental painting ‘Hörselberg’ (now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg), and I suspect that your painting was created in the course of his work on this theme, or perhaps to try out a colour effect or something similar. In our opinion, this is therefore an authentic work by Max Slevogt. I will include the painting in my database for the catalogue raisonné currently in progress.
Inscription in pencil ‘Galerie Tannhauser, Munich’ on the frame.
