This atmospheric and finely nuanced work by the important Austrian landscape painter Rudolf Ribarz vividly documents his characteristic transition from academic tradition toward Central European tonal Impressionism. Ribarz, who studied at the Vienna Academy under Albert Zimmermann alongside Emil Jakob Schindler and Robert Russ, devoted his life to unadulterated plein-air painting.
The composition presents the wooden, slightly weathered architecture of an old mill in Hartenstein in a striking close-up view. With a keen eye for texture, the artist contrasts the geometrically structured wooden planks of the mill with the wild, untouched nature surrounding it. The play of light and shadow on the wooden elements, as well as the masterful depiction of the rural-idyllic subject, reflect Ribarz’s deep understanding of the French paysage intime, which he refined during his long stay in Paris.
The result is a museum-quality, lyrical cabinet piece of Austrian plein-air painting of exceptional artistic refinement.
