Erich Waske depicts five stylised figures walking together towards an unknown destination. The central couple walk arm in arm, a single figure strides ahead, and two others follow at a distance, only one of whom shows her profile and thus establishes a connection with the viewer. The figures are moving towards a bright light source – a motif that lends the work symbolic depth. Typical of Waske's signature style are the clear black contours, the flat colouring and the calm composition. ‘Evening Walk’ is an impressive example of the timeless, poetic visual language of this forgotten expressionist of the first rank.
