Cézanne created only five etchings in his lifetime, all of which were produced in July 1873 when Cézanne experimented with this technique in Auvers-sur-Oise with Camille Pissarro and his friend, the painter and poet Armand Guillaumin. All three used a symbol as their signature, Cézanne choosing the sign of the hanged man. In ‘Guillaumin au pendu’, Cézanne portrays this very painter. The exact edition of the work is unknown, but is likely to be around 1,000 copies. Cézanne printed the etchings in the studio of Dr Gachet, who had an etching press at his disposal. The following year, Cézanne painted his famous work ‘La Maison du Pendu’ (The House of the Hanged Man). The idea for this first appeared in this etching. The spontaneity of the work suggests that Cézanne worked directly on the plate.
