In Helnwein's series of paintings entitled ‘Head of a Child,’ the child serves as a mirror for social conditions, historical violence and collective trauma. Helnwein himself explains his understanding of this concept: ‘For me, children are a great miracle ... it is only important to protect them from the methods of education and indoctrination used by the corrupt adult world.’
