Behind the cheerful design of the seemingly familiar comic character lurks a disturbing unease. The oversized representation, the monotonous colour scheme dominated by pink, and the ambiguous grin defy simple interpretation. Helnwein's conceptual approach sums up the central themes of his oeuvre: social violence and subliminal threats cloaked in childlike iconography.
