Erich Waske, often referred to as a ‘colour symphonist’, uses his characteristic reduced colour palette in this Still Life with Fruits to create an almost musical tension and dynamic. Although Erich Waske is largely unknown today, he was considered an important representative of German Expressionism during his lifetime and was close to the ‘Brücke’ artists' association. His work was severely decimated during the Second World War, which contributed to his being forgotten today. However, the combination of reduced forms and intense colour contrasts in his paintings, as in this still life, shows his ability to convey monumentality and symbolic power even in small formats.
