Craquelure formation. Illustrated in: Gerd Kaminsk, *China Painted. Chinese Contemporary History in the Pictures of Friedrich Schiff*, Vienna 1983, p. 44. (book available) If one read a newspaper in Shanghai between 1930 and 1947, the name Friedrich Schiff (1908–1968) appeared repeatedly, and everyone immediately knew who was meant. Friedrich Schiff was the best-known foreign painter in China and a household name. In 1930, at the age of 22, Schiff—who had outgrown Austria—moved to Shanghai. His great artistic talent found expression in a wide variety of works. (wienmuseum.at)
