The tradition of figurative painting and the works of Paul Cézanne can be found in Carl Hofer's oeuvre and especially in this drawing. The filigree line and the sketchy character of this work of art are particularly noteworthy. A fleeting moment was captured in skilfully placed strokes. When the studio was destroyed by a bombing raid in 1943, almost the entire early work as well as that of the middle creative period was completely destroyed. The present sheet is one of the rare examples that have survived from this period. The work is included in the catalogue raisonné of Karl Hofer's drawings and watercolours currently being compiled by Dr. h.c. Karl Bernhard Wohlert under no. 103.
