Catalogue raisonné number G675 Expressive oil painting by František Zden?k Eberl, an artist born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After relocating to Paris, where he worked and lived, he primarily used the French version of his name. At the height of his career, his name was mentioned in the same breath as those of his fellow painters and personal friends Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice de Vlaminck. In ‘The Prison Guard's Wife’, Eberl depicts a strong female character with her daughter, characterised by social realism and psychological depth. With a keen sense for milieu studies, the artist remains true to his theme: people on the margins of society. An impressive late work from 1952.
